Our 10 places to see in Saumur and surroundings
First things first, these are the places you absolutely have to visit in Saumur and its surroundings . And no, they don't include that UNESCO Heritage Site, we'll explain that later...
1. Saumur Castle
Being in the Loire Valley, it is clear that the question “What to see in Saumur?” has to have the answer: “A castle” . And, as we have already said, there is one. The Château de Saumur awaits you at the top of the town, with its bastions, its moats and its views. And with the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Museum of the Horse inside.

We went in and found a very cool exhibition of Lord of the Rings tapestries. Beyond the temporary exhibitions, we think that the interior is not essential, it depends on the time you have and how many castles you visit in the area.

Continuing along Rue des Moulins towards the vineyards, you will find another viewing point with a beautiful view. We discovered it while touring Saumur in a classic Kombi with Loire Vintage Discovery. We have placed the viewing point on the map below.
2. The San Pedro neighborhood
After seeing it from above, at the castle, it is time to go down. The historic centre of Saumur , the Saint Pierre district , is quite small and very pleasant to walk around.

You can't miss St. Peter's Square with the Church of St. Peter - the 17th century façade "hides" a medieval church with spectacular 16th century tapestries - or the narrow streets that surround it, with their mansions and half-timbered houses. Go to the town hall , the façade and the courtyard from Rue Bonnemere. You can also take a stroll around Place de la Bilange and Rue Franklin Roosevelt , in the most commercial part.

We were unable to go because there was a private event, but it is possible to go up to the terrace of the Dôme , the Saumur theatre. The views from there must be beautiful.
3. The views of Saumur from Offard-Millocheau Island
Time to head to the other bank of the Loire… or almost. In the centre of Saumur there is a large island in the middle of the Loire. Actually, two islands in one: the former islands of Millocheau and Offard, now joined together. To the west of Avenue General de Gaulle you are on the island of Millocheau and to the east on the island of Offard. In fact, it is worth crossing the Cessart bridge to have the best views of Saumur . We indicate the exact points on the map.
